Research Statement

Dr. Napper’s research broadly focuses on examining social influences on health-related and prosocial behaviors. Processes of interest include:

  • How and when do perceptions of peers shape young adults' behaviors in social contexts (i.e., alcohol use, bystander behaviors)?
  • What are the mechanisms by which parents influence young adults' health behaviors?
  • What factors shape experiences of belonging?
  • How and when are people able to engage in multiple health behavior change?

Biography

Dr. Napper is an Associate Professor at Lehigh University with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology and in the Health, Medicine, and Society Program. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology for the University of Sheffield, UK. Her research focuses on responses to health-risk information, attitude and behavior change, and the assessment of health-related cognition and behaviors. She explores the influence of peers and parents on substance use, sexual risk, and bystander behaviors of emerging adults. She also studies the efficacy of interventions aimed at reducing substance use and associated risks.
